Mechanical Engineering
About Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineering involves the analysis, design, manufacturing and maintenance of various systems. It is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines. Mechanical engineering is an essential to a wide range of activities that include the design, development, manufacture, management, and control of engineering systems, subsystems, and their components. Typically the manufacturing, power, aerospace, automotive, materials and processing industries employ mechanical engineers. As a result of the recent rapid expansion of technology, mechanical engineers also have become increasingly involved in computer aided design and visualization; robotics; bio-engineering; solar; wind and ocean energy sources; and space exploration. The breadth of the field provides the mechanical engineers with many possibilities for a satisfying career.
DEPARTMENT PROFILE:-
The Mechanical engineering Department of the VMIT POLYTECHNIC was established in the year 2010 to fulfill the requirement of skilled workers in the region by providing them a variety of professional courses which is mainly technical and vocational in nature under one roof. Currently the intake capacity of this department is 180. The Department with its richly integrated curriculum is committed to impart high quality education and training to the students.
LAB FACILITIES
The department is well equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and modern infra-structure facilities, to help efficient learning of engineering principles and hand-on practical training. Different laboratories are involved in experiments and projects. The laboratory staffs are highly skilled and experienced and keep up-to-date with latest technologies and equipments.
Applied Mechanics
The aim of the laboratory experiment is to develop thorough understanding of basic concept, laws and other principles of the mechanics. Also to solve engineering problems of mechanical devices like screw jack, winch crab, pulley, worm & worm wheel etc. This subject provides knowledge about the different types of forces/loads their effects while acting in different conditions/systems. The subject also provides the knowledge about basic concepts of laws of engineering, their application to different engineering problem.
Material Testing
Our material testing lab is well equipped with Universal Testing Machine, hardness, toughness and torsional testing machine. The aim of the laboratory is to understand & analyze various types of loads, stresses and strains along with the main cause of the failure. The subject is pre-requisite for understanding principles of machine design. Understanding mechanical properties of materials will help in selecting the suitable materials for various engineering applications
Hydraulics Mechanical Engineering
Fluid mechanics provides the theoretical foundation for hydraulics, which focuses on the engineering uses of fluid properties. We have reciprocating and centrifugal pump, Pelton wheel and Francis water turbine, and many more to enhance the practical knowledge of students. Hydraulic machines have important role in power generation control and transmission, water supply, irrigation and also in most of the engineering segments.
Thermal Lab
This lab deals with mechanical engines and machines. The thermal engineering lab is well equipped with Petrol engine and Diesel engine test rigs, Compressor, Refrigeration and Window air-conditioning test rigs etc. Use of air compressors is increasing due to automation. Hence it is necessary to understand constructional features and thermodynamic aspect of air compressor. Diploma engineer should understand the fundamentals of refrigeration and air- conditioning as there are many industrial applications and also many entrepreneual opportunities in this field.
Workshop Mechanical Engineering
This lab deals with skills shared with students of various machine tools and equipment. The knowledge of basic workshops such as wood working, fitting, welding, plumbing and sheet metal shop is essential for technician to perform his/her duties in industries. It includes theoretical as well as practical tips and exercises for learning the art of machining. Working in workshop develops the attitude of group working and safety awareness. This course provides miniature industrial environment in the educational institute.
SCOPE OF EMPLOYMENT
After successful completion of Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, the Diploma holders are employed in a wide range of exciting industries, including Aerospace, Automotive, Steel, Power, Manufacturing, Operation and Maintenance, Chemical, Construction and Utility Services. They can join as Junior Engineers in any Public and Private Sectors like NTPC, BHEL, IOCL, SAIL, Indian Railway, TATA Group, Jindal Steel, and L&T etc. Also students can continue with further Engineering studies in undergraduate level or specialize in certain fields with an advanced diploma.
Everything is good. their teaching staff, their infrastructure and all.
